Module Description
Asset Accounting
The AA module is part of the Finance (FI) module. It is also being referred to as Fixed Asset (FA) module. It is used to manage the complete life cycle of assets. See also EAM.
Apparel and Footwear
AFS is is an e-Business solution for the Apparel and Footwear industry.
Auto-ID Infrastructure
AII is used for automated shipping and inventory management solutions on batch or serial number level. It integrates RFID readers and barcode devices into a suitable backend such as SCM or ERP.
It is a prerequisite for SAP OER (Object Event Repository), which enables event management and traceability for each uniquely identified product or asset.
Accounts Payable
The AP module is part of the Finance (FI) module. It is used to process payments to suppliers.
Advanced Planning and Optimization
APO offers planning and optimization functionality within the business areas of .

Bulk Calculations - Gas
BCG is an add-on for oil- and gas industry; see BCS.
Bulk Calculations - Petroleum
BCP is an add-on for oil- and gas industry; see BCS.
Bulk Calculation Solution
BCS is an add-on for the oil- and gas industry to calculate bulk quantities based on temperature. At the centre of the product is a measurement cockpit that allows access to all relevant functions. There are 2 products in BCS:

Business Objects Financial Consolidation, formerly known as Outlooksoft
BFC is now SAP's premier financial and operational planning tool, replacing SAP BI-IP, SAP SEM-BPS, Business Objects Planning XI R2, and Business Objects Planning Ext.
Business Intelligence
BI is the former name for SAP's reporting and Data Warehousing solution. It is now called BW (Business Warehouse).
Business Objects
BO (a.k.a. BOBJ) is started out as an independent company, but was bought by SAP in 2007. It is now a division of SAP using the portfolio brand SAP BusinessObjects. It contains the following products and services:

    • WebI: Web Intelligence for Adhoc reporting
    • SAP Crystal Reports: used to provide formatted reports to large groups of users
    • Xcelsius: used for Dash Board reporting

Business Objects Data Integrator // Business Objects Data Services
BODI or BODS provides a GUI to create jobs that extract data from heterogeneous sources and load them into a single data warehouse or other data store. See also ETL.
Business Objects Planning and Consolidation
The BPC provides application combines planning, budgeting, and forecasting capabilities with management and legal consolidation functionality in a single application. It supports the planning process with what-if analysis and scenario-based planning.
Business Process Management
BPM enables joint modelling of business processes between business and IT project team members. After the modelling the processes can be executed on the Java-based process engine without prior need for coding.
Business Planning and Simulation
BW-BPS / BI-BPS is the successor product to SEM-BPS. It has since been superseeded by BI-BPS.
The software is part of the BW / BI system; it is designed to produce planning applications while making use of the familiar BW / BI OLAP features (drill-down, alerting, calculated keyfigures, )
Business Rule Framework
BRFplus is a business rule management system. It is event-driven, and allows the processing of both business process or technically orientated rules. During the implementation, each application that wants to use BRFplus, needs to be registered in a unique application class. BRFplus replaces BRF; but during the transition phase, both products exist in parallel.
BRFplus supports business rules for applications based on the Netweaver ABAP stack, BRM (Business Rules Management) offers the same functionality for applications based on the Netweaver Java stack.
Business Rules Management
BRM is a business rule management system. It is event-driven, and allows the processing of both business process or technically orientated rules. During the implementation, each application that wants to use BRM, needs to be registered in a unique application class.
BRM supports business rules for applications based on the Netweaver Java stack, BRFplus (Business Rule Framework) offers the same functionality for applications based on the Netweaver ABAP stack.
Business Warehouse
BRM is SAP's reporting and Data Warehousing solution. In the past it has also been known as BI (Business Intelligence).
CAD is used to connect SAP to external systems such as CAD, PDM, or GIS. Synchronisation is both ways; data entered in SAP is available in these systems, and data designed in CAD or GIS is available in SAP.
CCA is part of the CO (Controlling) module.
(Netweaver) Composition Environment
CE is a platform for building and running applications based on SOA (Service-Orientated Architecture) principles. It uses Java to make standard ECC transactions (perhaps enriched with data from other systems) available on browsers. While the user interface uses CE, the transaction logic still resides in ECC in the form of an RFC.
Contract Lifecycle Management
CLM automates contract creation, ensures instant contract visibility, and achieves compliance to contracted pricing, terms, and commitments on an enterprise-wide basis.
Campus Management
CM is now known as SLCM (Student Life Cycle Management) please see there.
Computerized Maintenance Management Systems
CMMS monitors equipment or facilities (operating hours, vibration, switching cycles...). The CMMS Interface enables the automatic generation of maintenance messages from these CMMS system into SAP.
CO is usually implemented together with FI (Finance). It is used for management rather than statuary reporting.
Consumer Packaged Goods
CPG is an industry solution covering consumer goods such as footwear, tobacco, cleaning products, food & drink etc. It covers all aspects of product development, manufacture, and logistics optimised for fast moving consumer goods (SD, MM, PP...).
Customer Service
Technically CS it's not a module in it's own right; instead it uses large parts of the PM (Plant Maintenance) and the SD (Sales and Distribution) modules of SAP.
Customer Relationship Management
CRM it'is used to manage customer interactions, e.g. Marketing, Service, Call Centres, Web Channels etc..
Demand to Supply
DTS is not an SAP module, but a business process spanning the modules

Data Transfer Solution
DTS is a dataflow management solution for major energy retailers developed and sold by AMT-Sybex, a member of the SAP PartnerEdge program.

EAM is used to manage the whole lifecycle of physical assets (Planning / build / operating / decommissioning / reporting). The software provides the following functionalities:

Extended Computer Aided Test Tool
eCATT is an automated testing tool for SAP applications running in SAP GUI or Web Dynpro environments. It works by recording an application, which can then be replayed with different sets of input values.
Since eCATT is native to SAP, it can also be used to test function modules and/or BAPIs directly. Apart from testing, it can also be used for data population when LSMW is deemed unsuitable.
Excise Duty
ED is fully integrated into the MM module and is used to analyse tax-relevant movements of goods attracting excise duty. The standard version is set to meet requirements of the beverage industry, but it can also be used for petroleum, tobacco, or any other material where a state imposes excise duties.
Environment, Health, and Safety (Management)
EHS(M) is used for a variety of safety processes, regulatory compliance, and corporate responsibility, including

BusinessObjects Enterprise Information Management
EIM is based on SAP Business Objects and provides comprehensive information management functionality.
Event Management
EM is part of the mySAP Supply Chain Management solution. It provides monitoring capability across any business process by comparing actual events with plans, and it raises exceptions each time plans are not precisely followed. EM can be directly connected to other mySAP Business Suite components or receive its data using IDocs, BAPI, or XI calls.
Enterprise Portal
EP provides a single point of access to all types of enterprise applications, databases, and services inside an organisation or shahred over the internet.
There is also a mobile edition that can be accessed via multiple devices.
BusinessObjects Enterprise Performance Management
EPM contains the following components

External Services Management
ESM is based on MM (Materials Management) and deals with the external procurement of services.
Extract, Transform, and Load
ETL is not a SAP module, but a process describing the transfer of data between two or more heterogeneous systems.
A recent SAP offering for ETL is FIM Financial Information Management.
Extended Warehouse Management
EWM is part of the SAP Supply Chain Management (SCM) application and it deals with the same issues as the WM module in ECC, i.e. inbound and outbound processes, storage bin management, as well as distribution centre processes.
Field Force Management
FFM is a mobile resource management tool with modules for both field technicians and managers.
Functions for field technicians include work order managerment (accept, progress, complete, reject, escalate), log work hours, access customer data etc.
Functions for managers include status monitoring, managing requests from field technicians, reporting, reassigning orders.
FI is usually implemented together with CO (Controlling). It is used for statuary reporting and it consists of the submodules
  • General Ledger Accounting (Classic or New GL)
  • Accounts Payable (AP)
  • Accounts Receivable (AR)
  • Asset Accounting (AA); sometimes also called Fixed Assets (FA)
  • Banking and Loans (BL)

Contract Accounts (Receivable and Payable)
FI-CA is a subsidiary ledger suited to industries with very high volumes of business partners and documents, such as Retail (mail order), postal services (large organizations), internet content sales etc.
FI-CA documents are accumulated and periodically transferred to the general ledger of either SAP or any other ERP system.
Financial Information Management (SAP BusinessObjects)
FIM is used to collect, map, load and consolidate financial information from disparate sources into one system. It is an ETL tool.
Financial Supply Chain Management
FSCM is a credit management tool that operates in a distributed environment and aims to improve cash flow of an organisation.
Unlike the traditional credit management module sitting between SD and FI, this tool also works with CRM or external logistics systems. Results are presented via a portal or via a BI system. The main components of the software are

Global Data Synchronisation
GDS is a process where CPG (consumer packages groups) manufacturers and retailers exchange trade items using the Global Data Synchronisation Network (GDSN). Source data can come from ECC or MDM and is sent to the GDS repository via XI.
General Ledger
GL is part of the Finance (FI) module. It holds all charts of accounts and is essential for statuary reporting.
Governance, Risk, and Compliance (SAP BusinessObjects)
GRC offers a preventive, real-time approach to governance, risk, and compliance. Automated risk and compliance monitoring activities proactively prevent risk events and compliance violations.
Global Trade Management
The GTM solution supports general trading, commodity trading, and general supply chain processes of global companies. It is a cross-industry platform.
HANA is SAP's first own database. Unlike competing products such as SQL server, Oracle, etc., SAP HANA is an in-memory database, leading to a large increase in processing speed over all its rivals.
Human Capital Management
The HCM module is used to manage all aspects of employing personnel. Up to version 4.7 the module was knows as HR (Human Resources). The module consists of the following submodules:

Human Resources
The HR module is used to manage all aspects of employing personnel. However, for all SAP versions above 4.7 the term HCM (Human Capital Management) is used instead of HR.
Handling Unit Management
HUM is used to reflect packaging-based structures across the logistics chain (inbound, warehouse, outbound). When switched on, all stock must be managed in handling units (HUs), as mixed stock is not allowed. HUs must be unique at client level, and they can be configured to match standards such as SSCC or EAN 128.
Internet Communication Manager
ICM is part of the SAP Web Application Server (AS). It is required to enable the Sap Web AS to communicate with the outside world via the protocols HTTP, HTTPS and SMTP.
Information Lifecycle Management
ILM is used to archive data on to low-cost storage devices. To deal with different data retention periods / rules, different archives can be defined for different objects.
Inventory Management
IM is part of the MM (Materials Management) module. It deals with stock management by quantity and value within an organisational unit, such as a plant. See WM (Warehouse Management) or eWM (extended Warehouse Management) for stock management based on actual bin locations within a warehouse.

Investment Management
IM is part of the FI (Finance) module and is used to manage corporate investment programs. It consists of the following components:
  • IM-AP: Appropriation Requests
  • IM-IP: Investment Programs
  • IM-IO: Investment Orders/Measures
  • IM-IS: Investment Support (see Grant Accounting within the FI-AA (Asset Accounting) Module)
integrated Product and Process Engineering
iPPE is used to to manage complex product structures without the need for material master data during the early stages of development. Instead of materials classification data is used for modelling. This module has been superseeded by PSM (Product Structure Management).
Logistics Execution
LE / LES combines the logistics elements from a range of SAP modules (MM, SD, WM) into one area, both within the SAP menus and within configuration.Components of LE / LES are:
  • LE-WM: Warehouse Management
  • LE-SHP: Shipping
  • LE-TRA: Transportation
Agency Business
LO-AB is used to process 3rd party transactions such as brokers or payment agencies. It is possible to process invoices or remuneration settlements irrespective of the preceeding transactions (e.g. when an agency receives a commission without being part of every sale or purchase concerned).
Learning Solution
LSO extends the SAP Training and Events Management (TEM) module to include curricula, web based training, and it allows every learner to keep control over his/her training activities. It contains the four components
  • Authoring Environment (based on learning objects; SCORM compliant materials from 3rd party can be imported)
  • Content Management (Knowledge Management platform)
  • Learning Management (training admin)
  • Learning Portal (fully integrated with SAP EP)
Master Data Governance (Business Objects)
MDG is a master data solution that is integrated within SAP products, esp. Business Objects. It could be seen as an umbrella for domain-specific MDM applications. Currently the following products exist:
  • MDG for Financials
  • MDG for supplier master data
  • MDG for material master data
  • for customer master data
Note that customers who require master data in non-SAP systems need to use MDM for Netweaver rather than MDG.
Master Data Management
MDM is a platform used to consolidate, cleanse and synchronise master data across a heterogeneous system landscape. Unlike MDG, MDM supports both SAP and non-SAP systems (see above).
Manufacturing Execution System
MES is used to control manufacturing operations. Amongst other functions it can be used to monitor and manage
  • Material availability and consumption per shift
  • Capacity availability and utilization
  • Schedule changes
  • Sampling for QM purposes
  • Measurement of KPIs (Key Performance Indicators)
  • Measurement of OEEs (Overall Equipment Effectiveness)
Materials Management
The MM module is used to manage end-to-end procurement and logistics business processes.
Material Requirements Planning
MRP is part of the MM (Materials Management) module. It controls stock levels to ensure material availability, e.g. to support sales or production.
Multiresource Scheduling
MRS is an add-on to SAP ERP, providing a graphical interface to a range of resource scheduling processes, e.g. based on PM Maintenance Orders, CRM Service Orders, Projects from PS or cProjects, or Customer Service (CS).
Object Event Repository
OER is is a central repository for lifetime information for serialized items. It can report on exceptions and trigger actions such as workflow items or messages.
It requires AII (Auto-ID Infrastructure) to capture the underlying data.
Profitability Analysis
PA is part of the CO (Controlling) module. It enables an evaluation of market segments (e.g. products, orders, customers,etc.), with respect to a company's profit or contribution margin.
Product Costing
PC is part of the CO (Controlling) module. It deals with planned and actual product costs e.g. during manufacturing processes.
Profitability and Cost Management (Business Objects)
PCM is used for activity based planning and budgeting using what-if scenarios. It can extract data from SAP and non-SAP sources. PCM results are displayed in Business Objects BI reporting tool, from where they can be shared with other applications.
Pricing and Costing for Utilities
PCU is an add-on for the SAP CRM industry solution for Utilities. It enables integrated cost and revenue calculations during the processing of quotations within CRM, leading to more transparency during the quotation process.
Product Lifecycle Management
PLM is used to manage a product from the initial idea through to manufacturing and product service.
Point of Sale Data Management
POS DM is part of the SAP Retail solution.The software transmits cash register sales data to back-offics systems throughout the day. Rather than performing a simple data transfer, the software also performs some data cleansing and potentially some aggregating to aid further processing. Data formats can be Idoc, BAPI, or XML.
Production Planning
The PP module is used to plan and control production processes such as Kanban, Repetitive Manufacturing and Production Order processing.
Project Systems
The PS module supports projects from the planning stage through execution and financial settlement. It allows close monitoring of projects against plans, budgets, and actuals.
Production Sharing Accounting (part of IS Oil)
PSA is used to manage the planning and reporting requirements for contractors and oil companies engaged in production sharing contracts.
Public Sector Collection and Disbursements
PSCD is part of the industry solution IS-PS-CA (IS Public Sector Contract Accounting) and deal various methods of payment processing. (see also TRM - Tax and Revenue Management).
Public Sector Management
PSM is used in the public sector to manage the following processes:
  • PSM-EC: Expenditure Certification
  • PSM-FA: Fund Accounting
  • PSM-FM: Funds Management
  • PSM-GM: Grants Management
  • PSM-FG: Functions for the U.S. Federal Government
Product Structure Management
PSM is part of the PLM Module. It is used to manage complex product structures without the need for material master data during the early stages of development. It is based on iPPE, but contains additional features that align it with the Web UI of PLM.
Quality Management
The QM module supports the planning and execution of quality inspection and the management of certificates.
Real Estate
SAP RE is not an SAP module, but a collection of business processes to support Real Estate business activities. It includes business processes from SAP SD, CS, PM, MM, and FICO.
Remote Logistics Management
RLM is part of IS Oil; it provides functionality to manage stock between onshore and offshore locations. It is tightly integrated with the MM (Materials Management) module.
Recipe Management
RM is part of the PLM module. It is used to create and manage recipes for process manufacturing. Apart for the ability to manage recipes on different organisational levels, the component contains an info system to evaluate recipe data.
Retail Master Data
RMD is the set of Master Data relevant to the SAP Retail solution. It consists of the following data elements:
  • Organizational structure
  • Business Partners (it is also possible to use vendors and customers instead)
  • Sites (distribution centres, stores, sites)
  • Products (also known as articles, items, matelials, SKUs...)
  • Hierarchies (article hierarchy and merchandise category hierarchy)
  • Assortment Management (=assigning products to assortments)
Supply Chain Management
SCM enables supply chain collaboration, planning, execution, and analytics across a company's entire supply network. It covers processes from SD, MM, LES, and PP.
Sales and Distribution
The SD module is used to manage end-to-end sales and logistics business processes.
Strategic Enterprise Management
SEM is built on the foundations of BW (BI), and enables reporting, planning, and budgeting across distributed businesses, corporate scorecards, and risk management.
Student Life Cycle Management
SLCM used to be known as CM (Campus Management). It is used by universities to manage the student life cycle end-to-end, reducing administrative overhead. The phases supported in this software are:
  • Recruitment
  • Admission
  • Equivalency Determination

  • Progression
  • Graduation
  • Alumni Relations
Service Management
The SM module allows a company to provide services to clients. It is often implemented alongside of PM (Plant Maintenance) and CS (Customer service). It uses elements of SD (e.g. for call handling) and MM (e.g. for the provision of parts to customers).
Supply Network Collaboration
SNC is part of the SAP SCM (Supply Chain Management) solution and provides tools to synchronise the flow of information between the supply chains of suppliers, the company concerned and their customers.
Spend Performance Management (Business Objects)
SPM is an analytical tool providing visibility into total spend. Data is aggregated and presented in reports similar to BW, using a web-based interface.
Supplier Relationship Management
SRM is a web-based solution to accelerate the procure-to-pay process for both goods and services. It can manage the following business processes:
  • Self service procurement (shopping carts)
  • Plan-driven and service procurement (SAP-generated requisitions (manual or MRP) being processed in SRM)
  • Strategic sourcing (RFI, RFQ, auctions)
  • Operational contract management
  • Supplier Qualification
  • Catalogue Content Management (MDM)
SAP Strategy Management (Business Objects)
SSM is used to link strategic plans in the enterprise to initiatives, people, and performance measures.
Supplier Self-Services
SUS is a web-based tool that integrates suppliers directly into the procurement process. It consists of
  • Document Exchange
  • Supplier Portal
  • Supplier Collaboration
It can be used for the procurement of goods and services, but it cannot be used with the SRM classic scenario.
Trade Promotions Management
TPMisprovides planning tools for manufacturers of consumer goods. This software enables supply chain planning based on marketing campaigns managed in the SAP CRM solution.
Treasury and Risk Management
TRM is provides tools for financial risk management, regulatory compliance, and cash flow and liquidity monitoring. It contains the following components:

Tax and Revenue Management
TRM is an integrated application designed for the public sector. It supports the following processes:
  • Taxpayer Management

Task and Resource Management (LE-TRM)
TRM is part of the Logistics Execution System (LES) and used to find the optimum resource to do the right task at the best time. Therefore, TRM analyses both sides: the task, as the requesting part and the resource, as the executing part.
Variant Configuration
VC allows the manufacture, sales, purchase, search etc. of complex products without requiring individual bills of material for each variant. VC is integrated into the following SAP applications:
  • CA: Classification
  • LO: Material Master
  • PP: PI Master Recipes, Routings, Bill of material, MRP, Production Orders
  • SD: Sales, Conditions
  • MM: Purchasing
  • CO: Controlling
Vehicle Management System
VMS is an application for the automotive industry. It covers procurement from OEMs as well as all interactions with dealers in new and used vehicles.
Warehouse Management
WM manages warehouse functions (inbound, outbound, transfer) at storage bin level. Do not confuse this module with the IM (Inventory Management) component of the MM (Materials Management) module, which manages stock levels by quantity and value, but not by actual location in the warehouse.
Yard Management
YM integrates with the LES Modules Transportation and Shipping to extend WM functionality beyond the physical warehouse location. It covers the following processes:
  • Vehicle check-in and check-out
  • Scheduling of doors and staging areas and scheduling charts
  • Creation and execution of yard movements
  • Creation and execution of yard operations such as weighing, sealing, unsealing
  • Registration of loading start and finish times
  • Status updates to freight forwarders
